Darkane: Expanding senses

02/02/04  ||  Lord K Philipson

I´ve heard alot of ravings about these swedish fellas lately and I never understood what the hype was about as I heard their debutalbum, “Rusted angel”, some 3 years back and wasn´t impressed the least. Then they released “Insanity” and I didn´t care. Now this comes out… Ok, so Darkane doesn´t suck, what else is new? But bare with me here fuckers…

They´re from Sweden as mentioned, which wouldn´t exactly take Einstein to figure out by listening to them. They also play very well, with guitar-solos I could only dream of to play. Not that I care. Pretty fast Haunted-ish shit with the usual Soilwork/In Flames/million others clean-singing chorus stuff that they hope will make them the new MTV2 heavy-rotation act. I´m so bored with that now. I almost forgot to mention the Meshuggah influences here and there. Whatcha gonna do about it?

Anyways, Darkane offer a little, but just a little, more speed at times compared to the usual bullshit I get to hear, though that doesn´t make them a favouriteband of the Lord, by far. They just feel like another Swedish wart on the ass of metal.

Damn, sometimes I come up with the wittiest fucken shit. “Another wart on the ass of metal”. Holy fuck, I rule.

Originality? Sure, tell me where and I´ll go look. Interesting? Sure, as much as watching a plant grow. Good? I´d say competent, but boring. Sales? Probably more than I will ever sell, but that only shows the stupidity of people.

I just don´t know… We have the same dilemma as in the early 90´s, when the Swedish death metal scene exploded and every fucken band that came out recorded in Sunlight and it all sounded the same. It´s fun for a while then it just gets so incredibly boring when you have heard it a million times before. Not to mention that you heard it done better. Another million times.

Darkane are just so typical Swedish they even compete with our famous meatballs as far as a trademark goes. If you have heard any of the bands in this genre, and you know what I mean, you have heard Darkane. Hell, you maybe even heard Darkane and thought it was Soilwork. Or the other way around. I can´t tell all these bands apart anymore… Damn, is it even Darkane I´m reviewing?

5/10
